GB Surfing is delighted to announce the appointment of Richard Weiler as its new Chief Medical Officer, a significant addition to the organisation’s medical and performance support team ahead of the Olympic pathway to LA 2028.
Richard joins GB Surfing with an outstanding pedigree in elite sport medicine. He is currently Lead Sports Physician at West Ham United and Chief Medical Officer for British Bobsleigh, and has served as Team GB Medical Officer at the last three Winter Olympic Games. He previously held the role of Senior Sports Physician at the Intensive Rehabilitation Unit at Bisham Abbey.
A FIFA Match Doctor with extensive international experience, Richard has worked at the 2022 and 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cups, as well as numerous FIFA Youth and Women’s World Cups. He is also an Honorary Associate Professor at UCL and has worked at Fortius Clinic in central London, a leading centre for specialist sports medicine and orthopaedic care, since 2011.
This is a huge appointment for GB Surfing. As our Olympic pathway to LA 2028 gathers pace, having access to medical expertise operating at the very top of world sport gives our programme a genuine step change in support for our athletes.
Richard’s experience managing athlete health and performance at the highest level will be invaluable as our surfers take on increasingly demanding international schedules.
Richard will play a key role supporting our Olympic squad, as well as our British teams competing at international events, helping ensure our surfers have access to world-class medical care and injury prevention support wherever they compete.
This appointment reflects GB Surfing’s continued investment in building a genuinely elite, professional environment around our athletes, and we’re thrilled to have someone of Richard’s calibre in our corner.
