GB Surfing Olympic Training Squads Selection Criteria 2026/27

The GB Surfing Olympic Training Squads Selection Criteria for 2026/27 can be found here: Selection Policy

This is the first criteria of GB Surfing’s updated strategy which goes live in March 2026.

At the centre of the strategy are two Olympic Development Squads, designed to act as the system’s primary performance conversion mechanism, bridging the gap between training and competition. Selection is based on demonstrated behaviours, engagement, and progression trends, rather than reputation or historic results alone

The Two Squads

  1. PODIUM SQUAD

GB Surfing’s strongest Olympic qualification prospects. Athletes who are not consistently making top 8 worldwide but showcasing technical ability to produce international results and be Podium competitive at future games.

  1. PROGRESSION SQUAD

Leading development athletes who have evidenced international success through competing or show natural (technical) ability demonstrating the skills and capabilities of a potential Olympic surfer.

The new performance strategy will put a greater focus on the surfer’s daily training environment focusing on four key areas:

  • Quality over quantity
  • Relevance to competitive demands
  • Early identification of performance breakdowns
  • Clear responsibility and objective accountability

The 2026 Performance Strategy therefore represents a deliberate shift from isolated camps and event-centred training to an athlete-led, behaviour-centred, environment-driven model.

Performance outcomes are the cumulative result of long-term daily behaviours. As such, the programme will prioritise consistency, relevance, and decision-making over isolated performance peaks.
