Team England and GB Progression Squad member, Lukas Skinner, last week created history by winning silver at the 2023 ISA World Junior U16 Surfing Championships.
Held at Macumba Beach, Rio do Janeiro, Lukas won all of his heats on his way to the Final and was narrowly beaten by Spanish surfer, Hans Odriozola, who caught a last minute wave to win the contest by less than half a point. Lukas also beat two Brazilian surfers in the Final, one who was surfing on his home beach.
Lukas, who is 15, and lives in Perranporth, had only recently recovered from a break in his left foot in August, which had kept him out of the water until three weeks before the championships, making the result even more impressive.
The silver medal caps a year in which Lukas won two other major surfing contests, the World Grom Search Finals in Australia and the European Grom Search Final in Morocco.
It was an incredible result for Lukas and has helped put British surfing on the map. It is however just the start of the journey, and Lukas will join up with the Progression Squad in Peniche next week to continue his development.
