Following an agreement between GB Surfing and the BSurf Committee, GB Surfing acquired the major hosting rights and responsibility for the financing, organising and running, of the British National Championship from 2023.  

The competition was renamed the GB Cup with the aim to bring the Championships in line with other large surfing events around the world, raising the level of competition and better preparing British surfers to compete at an Olympic level.
