GB SURFING NATIONAL SELECTOR: ROLE DESCRIPTION
Who we are
In 2016 the International Olympic Committee confirmed the inclusion of surfing in the Olympic programme for Tokyo 2020, and subsequently in Paris 2024, Los Angeles 2028 and Brisbane 2032.
Following this announcement, British Surfing Ltd, recently renamed GB Surfing, was formed by the four home nations – Channel Islands, England, Scotland, Wales – and is responsible for the selection, preparation and management of British shortboard surfing teams and its respective athletes.
In 2020 British Surfing Ltd was successful in securing a £1.35 million investment from UK Sport. This funding was awarded to enhance the process of developing and supporting current and future generations of surfers with the capability and determination necessary to win Olympic medals.
Background
Due to recent organisational changes, GB Surfing is updating the composition of its selection panels and is recruiting for two new selectors.
One selector with a strong background in international surfing competition, athlete development and performance, and one selector with a legal background and a keen interest in Sports Law and high-performance surfing.
Successful applicants will be responsible for selecting all British squads and teams for the duration of the LA 2028 Olympic Cycle. These will include; annual selection to the GB Surfing Progression Squad, Selection for the ISA World Games when surfers compete for GBR and selection for the LA 2028 Summer Olympic Games.
These are volunteer roles with expenses covered where necessary. Successful candidates will also receive a small team kit issue and where appropriate may be invited to attend camps or competitions in order for them to perform their duties.
Position 1: Surfing Expert
- Hold no conflicts of interest with any current or prospective squad member or GB Surfing stakeholder. This includes friendships, relationships, prior or current coaching relationship, family member or any other close association.
- Be an international judge or Coach with experience of high-performance surfing.
- Understand the principles of selection.
- Be a recognised expert in performance surfing.
- Hold an interest and a passion for seeing GB Surfers perform on the international stage.
- Be able to act impartially and in conjunction with the Selection Policies developed by GB Surfing.
- Be able to withstand criticism.
- Must be able to work effectively within a small team of selectors.
- Must be trustworthy and able to act with integrity and confidentiality.
Position 2: Legal Expert
- Hold no conflicts of interest with any current or prospective squad member. This includes friendships, relationships, prior or current coaching relationship, family member or any other close association.
- Be a fully qualified Lawyer with an interest in Sports Law, especially selection and non-selection to squads and teams.
- Understand the principles of selection.
- Work with GB Surfing in the construction and the review of all of its selection policies.
- Ensure that the ‘process’ of selection is followed and with the Chair of the Selection Panel ensure that all decisions made are within the scope of the selection policy.
- Hold an interest and a passion for seeing GB Surfers perform on the international stage.
- Be able to act impartially and in conjunction with the Selection Policies developed by GB Surfing.
- Be able to withstand criticism.
- Must be able to work effectively within a small team of selectors.
- Must be trustworthy and able to act with integrity and confidentiality.
Appeals
The candidate will also;
- Act as the legal advisor to the Appeals Panel.
- Summarise the merits of an individual appeals, or where an appeal fails to meet the criteria outline in the Appeals Process, to the Appeals Panel for their consideration.
